  :: Short description
It is a country-wide important health resort and spa, the most important health resort of Covasna county. Before 1876 Covasna was the centre of the historical Orbaiszék. It was proclamed town in 1952, and it has been giving its name to county since 1968. Together with Chiurus which is part of it, it had a population of 12 515 in 1992 (from wich 3 929 Romanians, 8 451 of Hungarian origin and 59 of other nationality). The town is made up of two parts: Covasna and Vajnafalva. The town directed towards east-north is cut by the town is of 656 ha. It lies at 35 km from the county town, Sfantu Gheorghe, (on the road no. 121), at 19 km from Targu Secuiesc, at 60 km from Brasov, and 250 km from Bucharest. It can be also reached by railway from Brasov. This health resort, rich in natural therapeutic values, lies at the south-eastern edge of the (inner) basin of the Eastern Carpathians, at the southern corner of the Upper-Háromszék basin, at an altitude of 550-600 m. The border of Covasna expands from the plain of Raul Negru as far as Lacauti. The highlands of the Carpatian-curve rise towards east from the spa. The background of the town -- from Ghelinta as far as Zagon -- is formed by the Bretcu mountains. The town lies on the border between the woddy hilly country climate and the mountain medium height one. The leafy-forests and the coniferous woods have transformed the Tündér valley into a pleasant place. Covasna justly deserves the name of "the town of one thousand mineral watwers". There is a varied composition of the mineral water layers. Due to its natural health factors -- medicinal waters, mofettes, mild climate -- it can be ranked among the famous spas of Europe. The apparence of the mineral water springs and the moffetes are connected with the tectonic breaking line. On this small area the can be found alkaline, a litle bit salty, chalytbeate and carbonated mineral waters. On the territory of the town there are 1500 springs of minneral water of different composition.
Covasna has flourished as a health-resort since the 1880's. In 1881 was elaborated the fundamental rule of the spa's activity. The mineral water from Covasna won gold metal at the exhibition from Trieste in 1882 and 1887. In 1891 the water of the Horgászkút from Vajnafalva was bottled and sold in Brasov, Sfantu Gheorghe and Kézdivasárhely. In 1895 there were already sold 100.000 bottles of mineral water. According to Hankó Vilmos, Europe's richest area in carbone-dioxide springs was Covasna. The carbinic acid factory from Voineşti started its activity in 1931.
Today, at Covasna, on the biggest heat-curin centres functions. The Tünder valley and its environs are the most beautiful sights oh the area. The mineral waters and mofettes of Covasna are recommended for the following diseases: heart and blod-vessel troubles (myocarditis, heart valve troubles), skin-affections, diseases of the alimentary canal and endocrine glands, women diseases, locomotor diseases, central and peripheral nervous system diseases respectively. There are serval pump rooms, physioterapical rooms, warm mineral water baths and mofettes at the patients' disponal. The strenghtrening effect of the rich resinous aerosols and the negativ ionization is important. Additional therapies: hydro and electrotherapy, thermoterapy, therapeutical wlks, climate therapy, inhale-therapy. Several health hotels have been built sience 1972 (Covasna, Cerbul, Turist Hotels, the Heart Hospital). An important place in the industry of the town is hold by the wool-mill and craftmen's cooperatives, wich process the wool of racka-sheep -- from this kind of wool is preparated the so much demanded broad-cloth from Covasna. Other branches of industry are: wood-working industry (period furniture, chipboard), food industry (biscuit factory, meat and milk processing factory) and textile industry. The sight of the town: the Pokolsár (a carbonic, salty mud-volcano -- only natural rarity in Transylvania), the mineral water springs and mofettes of the Tündér and hankó valley, the narrow cable-railway between covasna and Komandó (have built in 1886). In the month of July (on the last Sunday) Tündér valley is the scene of a spectacular mass entertainment: on this day, on St. Illés day, it is hold the shepherd-wedding (Nedeia mocănească). In the nearby mountains there can be organized pleasant walking tours. You can visit the sights of Kézdivásárhely, Sfantu Gheorghe, Brasov, Sinaia, Brasov-Poiana, the Lake St. Ana's and "Dracula" Castel on Bran by bus.
